Before anything else: Confirm the address is exactly unstablesmp.io and the port field is blank. A wrong address is the most common cause of every error below.
Work through this order
- Confirm the address is exactly unstablesmp.io with no port.
- Delete the saved server entry and re-add it. Saved entries keep old values.
- Fully restart the game or launcher, not just the server connection.
- Update your Minecraft client to a current build.
- Restart your network adapter or device.
- Check the Discord for a current outage or maintenance notice.

Delete and re-add the server
Minecraft remembers the address you typed. Editing the entry sometimes leaves the old value in place, so the reliable fix is to delete the entry entirely and add it again from scratch.
- Remove the server from your server list.
- Add it again using unstablesmp.io as the address.
- Leave the port field blank.
- Save and join.
Version mismatches
Unstable SMP advertises 1.21.1+ on Paper 26.3. Server-side messages about outdated clients are posted in the Discord - check there before reinstalling.
Network and firewall issues
- Turn off any VPN or proxy. Corporate and school networks often block Minecraft traffic.
- Restart your router and network adapter - this fixes most one-off timeouts.
- Try a different network, such as a mobile hotspot, to isolate the problem.
- Allow Minecraft through the firewall on Windows.
- If the connection drops repeatedly but works sometimes, your network is likely filtering the connection rather than the server refusing it.
Still stuck
Open a ticket in the Unstable SMP Discord, or email support@unstablesmp.io. Include:
- Your Minecraft username.
- Your client version.
- The exact error message, copied as text rather than a photo.
- Whether it fails on another network.
Never share your password, session token or launcher login with anyone. It is the most common scam aimed at Minecraft players, and real support never needs it.
